One of my favorite quotes comes from Raymond Reddington, one of the main characters on NBC’s The Blacklist: “There is nothing that can take the pain away. But eventually you will find a way to live with it. There will be nightmares. And every day when you wake up, it will be the first thing you think about. Until one day, it will be the second thing.”
I know that quote seems like a downer—that’s because it is. But it also gives hope. Yes, the pain is there. No, you can’t wave a magic wand and make it go away (believe me, I wish we could). But with time, it will fade.
Many of my writer friends on Twitter are querying their projects to agents. This process is a bloodbath of rejections with the hope that a few will show interest. Unfortunately, it’s the nature of the beast. Our hazing, if you will. Still, it doesn’t make the “this really isn’t for me” letter any easier to swallow. And with blow after blow after blow, it can take its toll.
But the fight is worth it. It’s worth finding that one enthusiastic agent. That one person who’s excited to campaign for your work. The work you hold so close to your heart but still want to share with the world. It will happen if you don’t give up.
There will be pain. That’s a given. And there will be days “when you wake up, it will be the first thing you think about. Until one day, it will be the second.”
And you know what you’re gonna do? You’re gonna “find a way to live with it,” and you’re gonna keep going. Because you’re worth it.
‘Til next time!
